The Future Diary's story is set in a fictional city, but the anime's real backdrops sit in Nikko, Tochigi, and the western Tokyo suburbs of Nishitokyo and Musashino. We have verified 29 real locations from the anime (未来日記), eleven of them clustered around the Kinugawa hot spring resort in Nikko.

Where does The Future Diary take place?

Yuki Amano's diary game plays out in a city the source manga and anime invent rather than name after a real one. What we can verify instead is where the animators actually drew their backgrounds from. Our map of confirmed sites traces episode 13 to Kinugawa Onsen, the hot spring town inside Nikko, Tochigi, and traces the everyday scenes around Yuki's neighborhood to Nishitokyo and Musashino, two adjoining Tokyo suburbs west of the city center.

Nikko: the Kinugawa Onsen episode

Eleven of the 29 confirmed locations sit in Nikko, all matched to episode 13, and all of them cluster around Kinugawa Onsen: the Kurogane Bridge, Furukama Falls, the Kinu Wind Cave, the Kinugawa Onsen Fureai Bridge, and two resort hotels, Asaya and Hotel Kinugawa Gyoen. It is the single largest concentration of verified spots in the series and the only episode where the story leaves the suburbs for a hot spring trip. Kinugawa Onsen Station, on the Tobu line, puts a visitor at the edge of this whole cluster without a transfer.

Nishitokyo and Musashino: the everyday scenes

Nishitokyo carries seven confirmed locations across episodes 3 and 8, most of them around Musashino University: a parking lot on campus, the Yagisawa bus stop nearby, a rice cracker shop near Seibu-Yagisawa, and a bar called Jaguar's. Musashino itself, the neighboring ward, adds Tampa Cafe and Musashino Central Park. Together they read as the ordinary commute and hangout spots the story needs before its plot turns violent, the kind of suburban Tokyo block a viewer could actually walk between two train stops on the Seibu Shinjuku Line.

Sagamihara, Kawasaki and the rest

Sagamihara, Kanagawa, adds four confirmed spots near Hashimoto, including Sagamihara Station itself, split across episodes 6 and 26. Kawasaki contributes three, all at Yomiuri Land, the amusement park on the Tokyo-Kanagawa border, in episode 3. One location each rounds out Nerima and Machida, both Tokyo wards. None of these clusters is large on its own, but together with Nishitokyo and Musashino they outline a loop through western Tokyo and northern Kanagawa that never requires a car.

Is the city where the diary game takes place a real place?

No. Neither the Japanese nor the English Wikipedia entry for the series names a real-world model for it. What is real is everything this guide's map actually points to: Kinugawa Onsen in Nikko, the Musashino University area in Nishitokyo, and the Sagamihara and Kawasaki spots the animators used as background reference. Visit those; the story's own city hall does not exist anywhere to visit.

Getting to the two clusters

The two halves of this map sit far enough apart that a visitor should treat them as separate trips rather than one day out. Kinugawa Onsen Station, run by Tobu Railway, sits at the edge of the episode 13 cluster and connects toward central Tokyo without a transfer. Nishitokyo and Musashino sit on the opposite side of the city, and the Seibu-Yagisawa area near the catalog's Musashino University matches is served by Seibu Railway. Sagamihara's Hashimoto cluster, on a JR line, adds a third stop for a visitor who wants all three in one longer weekend rather than a single afternoon.
